NI Builder Magazine tells usAs the main contractor for Queen’s University Belfast’s new £4.9m Seamus Heaney Centre, GEDA preserved the heritage of two listed buildings while upgrading the site to meet modern standards. Transforming two Grade II-listed buildings into Queen’s new £4.9m Seamus Heaney Centre has proved both a challenging and rewarding experience for its main contractor.

Dungannon-based GEDA Construction is well-versed in handling projects of all sizes and complexity and pushing the boundaries of engineering and construction.

The refurbished site occupies buildings at 38-40 University Road and 3 Mount Charles. Spanning 1,000 sqm, it doubles the size of the original centre founded in 2004 and opened by the acclaimed poet himself.

Having successfully navigated the many challenges emerging along the way, the Seamus Heaney Centre now represents a distinguished addition to GEDA’s portfolio.

“A significant milestone for our company, it reflects our ability to handle complex, high-profile projects and reinforces our reputation as a trusted and capable construction partner,” said Eddie Murnin, Associate Director of Construction at GEDA

“This project stands out as a testament to our expertise, collaborative spirit and unwavering commitment to preserving cultural heritage while advancing modern construction practices.”  Source NI Builder July 24

WHY USE LIME-BASED RENDER AND PLASTER?

SMET’s bauprocalc products are CE-marked, factory-produced hydraulic hardening skim coat plasters and render based on lime, specially designed for hand and machine application produced to DIN EN 998-1. bauprocalc KG and bauprocalc 830 contribute to a healthy internal atmosphere.

They are an excellent alternative to plaster and renders containing gypsum or patent cement which are too strong and have less vapour permeable qualities.

They are ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and rooms where high humidity levels are expected. bauprocalc KG produces a mortar that is softer than cement mortar. After the initial set, stability and strength gradually build up over time, allowing enough flexibility to cope with minor settlement or movement in the building during this period, thereby reducing the risk of cracking.

bauprocalc 830 has unique properties, making it suitable for application on low, medium, and high-density substrates, especially suited for renovating old /listed buildings and ecological new builds.

Good vapour permeability performance allows an unhindered transference of excess internal moisture through the building to the outside, thereby contributing significantly to a balanced and healthy internal atmosphere.

SMET is delighted to have supplied its bauprocalc plaster and SMET NHL 3.5 for the lime plastering of The Seamus Heaney Centre, Queen’s University Belfast.
