Home Town Pride for SMET

Newry based Smet Building Products Ltd in partnership with Kilsaran Build, has been awarded the supply of BS 7533 compliant Bedding Course, Jointing and Priming Materials by principal contractor SIAC (NI) Ltd for the Newry Public Realm regeneration scheme, part of the Newry Master Plan.

The total area of the project compromises 5,500 m² of granite paving, installed in Newry’s prime City Centre locations; Monaghan Street, Hill Street, Margaret Square and Marcus Square.

“We are proud to supply and be associated with this prestigious project in our home town,” said Joris Smet, Director of Smet Building Products Ltd. We supply our High-Strength Bedding Concrete ECO in site-silos, conveniently located in the compound at Edward Street. The Bedding Course Material is mixed in the compound by use of a continuous mixer (fixed at the bottom of the silo) directly into the bucket of the telleporter, or mortar tub. From this central location, material is transported to the application site, where the paving contractor places the bedding course material directly onto the road-base. After priming the granite setts or slabs with Priming Slurry, supplied in manageable 20kg bags, they are placed into the prepared bedding course and compacted into place. This application provides a bonded, rigid construction to BS 7533 requirements. This just-in-time method of supply means continual and consistent quality of product delivered right on site, satisfying the needs of SIAC in delivering a timely project.”

After the bedding course has set and the granite paving is cleaned, the joints are jointed or grouted using our Rapid-Set Jointing Mortar ECO. This BS 7533 compliant jointing material is a flowing/liquid material moved into place using a floor squeegee.  This process can be described similar to interior grouting of floor tiles. The final granite is cleaned and finished using a sponge machine or belt cleaner.

The result: a beautiful natural stone, granite paving finish, resistant to vehicular traffic that will endure a busy City Centre, such as Newry.

Joris Smet explains their success in securing such a high profile project. “We pride ourselves on executing the highest levels of customer service, not only to SIAC (NI) Ltd our direct client, but also directly to Donegal Paving, the paving contractor.  By providing this level of customer focus; Smet Building Products Ltd demonstrates best-practice in construction partnerships.”
